Upcycling: festival clothes (Part 2)

This is the second blog in our series on upcycling old clothes. In this blog, I will show you how to upcycle a shirt to a strapless top.

Upcycling is the re-purposing of old clothing into new garments and is a skill which fashion designers and sewers have always practiced. Music festivals are a fantastic opportunity to experiment with upcycling and infuse a piece of clothing with your own personality.

Please check out the first part of this blog series where I show you how to upcycle a t-shirt and jeans into fun new pieces. More detailed versions of these videos are available to our students. Visit our courses page for more information on our fashion design courses.

Here's how we did it...

Upcycling a shirt to a strapless top

1: Cut off the sleeves – these will be used as a belt later on.

2: Remove the top of the shirt.

3: Rip off the collar.

4: Cut elastic to fit.

5: Sew a seam over the top of the elastic and turn down the edge.

6: Cut your collar in half and sew onto the centre front section.

7: Sew the sleeves together in a circle to use as a belt.
